Clacton Leisure Centre is getting ready to host a free family fun day extravaganza to celebrate its 50th birthday.

The Tendring District Council (TDC) facility, in Vista Road, Clacton, has put together an exciting event packed with entertainment and activities for all ages to mark the milestone on Saturday, 17 August.

The celebration marks the anniversary of the opening of Clacton Swimming Pool, which was later transformed into Clacton Leisure Centre following the addition of a sports hall.

The centre now boasts a Wellbeing Zone and a gymnasium, tennis courts and all-weather pitches, as well as a popular café, children’s play area and a revamped skate park.

A highlight of the birthday event is a special skateboarding showcase hosted by Maverick Skateboarding, featuring live DJs and skilled skateboarders, while a gaming marquee will provide active gaming experiences – combing technology and physical activity - for enthusiasts of all ages.

Families can look forward to a lively pool party, inflatables, soft play, and face painting. The leisure centre will also offer free fitness class taster sessions, free swimming sessions, and free access to the Wellbeing Zone throughout the day.

Sports fans will be entertained with a football tournament featuring local clubs, as well as basketball and gymnastics displays showcasing local talent.

Councillor Mick Barry, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said there will be an array of free activities, ensuring a memorable day for everyone.

“The day will be jam-packed with fantastic activities, all free of charge,” he said.

“We’ve put together a great event with the help of local clubs and organisations and hope everyone comes out to enjoy the festivities and celebrate this milestone.

“Clacton Leisure Centre has been a big part of the community for half a century, helping to improve our residents’ quality of life by keeping them fit and healthy.

“This fun day is a way to give back to customers and the community – and to say thank you for their support over the past 50 years.

“I would also like to thank leisure centre staff past and present for their part in making Clacton Leisure Centre the success story it is today.”

The Free Family Fun Day gets underway at 9am and will run until 5pm.
