Wheelie bins have been introduced to the majority of homes in Tendring under changes to our waste contract.
The large 180 litre bins, supplied free, have replaced your black sacks and will be collected fortnightly. This will help reduce the amount of litter caused by bags being ripped open and promote recycling.
Recycling collections remain unchanged, with weekly food waste collections and alternate weekly collections of recyclables in the red and green boxes.
Bank Holiday collections from August 2019 will NO LONGER BE DELAYED BY A DAY, WITH COLLECTIONS TAKING PLACE ON THE BANK HOLIDAY.
Waste and recycling collections will only be delayed by Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year. Follow your collection calendar that was delivered with your wheelie bin.
Every property in the district has been assessed to see if it is suitable for a wheelie bin. A small number of homes which are unsuitable, such as those with no front or side access, continue to have a weekly black sack collection. Most flats will also see their waste collection unchanged.
If you are a garden waste customer, the new waste service day changes do not apply to this service, please continue to present your garden waste for collection on the day indicated on your calendar.

Within the Tendring District we only accept plastic bottles. These are predominantly made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). This grade of plastic is of high quality and as such, unlike some of the lesser grade plastics continue to generate a demand within the recycling markets. The revenue generated from the sale of this high quality plastics reduces the overall cost of the refuse and recycling contract. All our plastic bottles, tins and cans are processed at the Rainham Plastics Recovery Facility and are made into a product available for sale or re-use within the UK.
We have looked into systems whereby mixed types of plastics could be collected as part of our kerbside collection service. Unfortunately the cost of collecting a co-mingled recyclate of plastics and paper placed a cost pressure upon the service which was prohibitive. These costs increase as all the different types of plastics require further sorting and separating at the reprocessing plants. The lower grades of plastics then attract a much lower value on the recycling market, resulting in an overall cost to recycle these mixed plastics.
Please make sure you recycle all your plastic bottles within your green recycling box including fizzy drink bottles and water bottles, milk bottles, bleach bottles, cleaner bottles and shampoo bottles, as well as tins, cans and aerosols.

The new service commenced in June 2019. It took approximately 3 months to complete delivery of the bins. Information packs were delivered with your bin.
You do not need to be at home when your bin is delivered. The bin was delivered onto your property.

We understand that not everyone will be able to manage a wheeled bin, and, if necessary we will offer an Assisted Collection service, whereby the bin is collected and returned to a point nearer to your house. If all residents of the property are elderly or disabled and will have difficulties manoeuvring a wheelie bin to the front of their property you can apply for assistance.
Everyone who is on an assisted collection remains on an assisted collection. The crew collects and returns your bin to your collection point once they have emptied it. The wheelie bins were delivered to your collection point.
You can put your rubbish in your wheelie bin however you like, using black sacks will help keep your bin cleaner. We recommend using smaller bags then you will be able to fit more into your bin. We do not recommend putting rubbish in loose as this will make your bin messy and Tendring District Council will not be responsible for cleaning the bin.
The wheelie bin is for residual waste only, such as non-recyclables, plastic food packaging, polystyrene, tissues etc. Please do not put recyclables, food waste and garden waste into your wheelie bin.

Please note you will only qualify for authorised side waste if you are recycling everything you can. Officers will carry out routine inspections to ensure households are fully recycling using kerbside boxes and food caddy. If you do not qualify, additional waste will need to be disposed of at your local tip.
Pet waste is not taken into account when assessing for additional side waste. This includes all animals such as cats, dogs, horses and chickens.
No, Tendring District Council will not be selling any wheelie bins. We will only collect from Tendring District Council bins and we will not collect from any unauthorised bins.
To ensure your wheelie bin is collected please make sure the lid is securely shut. Any additional black sacks left at the side of your bin will not be collected.
All properties have been assessed for wheelie bins. Any properties that have no side access and no front boundary remain on a weekly black sack collection.
If you currently have a weekly collection from a bulk refuse bin your collection has not changed.
If you are on our rural and restricted round your refuse and recycling collections have not changed. You remain on a weekly collection for black sacks and an alternate weekly collection for recycling with no food waste collection. We are currently reviewing our rural round. Any properties that change from a rural round to a wheelie bin service will be notified nearer to the time.
All properties that can accommodate a wheelie bin will be issued with one. If you do not use your wheelie bin then your waste will not be collected. The council has a legal requirement under Section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA) to collect household waste. Section 46 says that the local authority can define the kind of bin to be used.
All containers for recycling and rubbish remain the property of Tendring District Council. The householder is responsible for their wheelie bin.

It is extremely unlikely that your bin will be blown over and hit a car. The bins are designed to stand up straight. You may be able to put your wheeled bin onto your home insurance.
Your wheelie bin will only need to be presented 26 times a year. The majority of residents will present their bins on the boundary of their property which will not cause an obstruction on pavements. After speaking to neighbouring councils who already operate a wheelie bin service, the issue of wheelie bins blocking pavements and causing an obstruction to pedestrians is very unlikely.
Wheelie bins do not conflict with conservation laws – this is because they are mobile.
No, the opposite. Wheelie bins will help reduce the amount of litter caused by bags ripping due to weather or animals and will make the areas tidier. If you are recycling everything you can, including your food waste this will help reduce odour and deter maggots.
There is no sufficient evidence to support that moving from a weekly black sack collection to a fortnightly wheelie bin service will increase fly tipping.
Churches that currently receive a collection from us will be entitled to a 180L wheelie bin. The delivery of the wheelie bin will need to be requested through the Waste Management Team.
