Swim Safe

This is a free event available to children. It is open to schools and the public during the summer months.

It teaches them how to swim safely in the sea and what to do if they get into trouble. They learn the dangers of the sea, flags and safety signage, how to raise the alarm if they get in trouble and how to float to live.

To book public Swim Safe sessions for Clacton - Martello Beach, please use our booking link

Sessions will be available to book six weeks before they are due to start.

Beach Cleans

Bringing local people together to raise awareness of the importance of keeping our beaches clean and tidy.
To further make people aware of the dangers of plastics and other waste products that are polluting our seas and oceans.

Wellbeing Walks and Runs  (Park Run)

Bringing people together to raise awareness even more with regards the benefits of walking and running for health and to help demonstrate this easy and enjoyable form of exercise that can be carried out at any time of day, it’s open to all ages and will encourage more people to enjoy the seafronts. We now organise park runs Every Saturday mornings for Adults and Sunday mornings for children.

Seafront Safety Workshops

To teach young children how to stay safe when visiting the beach and what to look out for if they get into danger.

Each year we are increasing this beach safety awareness campaign and more schools are requesting our seafront staff to attend and give beach safety work shops talks, it is important to reach out to the children at a young age and make them aware of the seafront hazards, with the help of the MCA / RNLI we are able to issue beach safety leaflets to the children and schools.

Although similar to the swim safe events, these do not involve entering the water which allows us to put on more sessions because we do not require the swim teachers to attend these.

We also work with local businesses and organisations to promote sea safety. These include seaside explorers which teaches children aged 3-11 how to sensibly and safely enjoy the beach. These sessions also teach the children important knowledge such as the effects of changing tides, different uses of sea defences, how marine flora and fauna have adapted to their environment among many other topics.

You can email seafronts@tendringdc.gov.uk if you would like to book a seafront safety workshop.

Beach Toy Libraries

Families looking to enjoy the Essex Sunshine Coast this season can benefit from a series of free Beach Toy libraries.

Beach toy libraries can currently be found in various locations along the seafront at Clacton, Holland, Walton-on-the-Naze, Frinton, Manningtree, Brightlingsea and Dovercourt. Run by a number of different community groups around the district, the sites contain fun items such as buckets and spades for people to use, then return to the Toy Library box at the end of the day for others to use and enjoy.

As well as ensuring the toys are not just used once, making them more environmentally friendly, they can also be useful for families on low incomes.

Visitors to our lovely beaches who do buy new beach toys but are not likely to use them again for a while are encouraged to donate them at the end of their stay to the Toy libraries. Please, please, please don't leave beach toys alone on the beach, either take away with you or leave in the Beach Toy Library for a new little set of hands to play with.

Whilst we do not encourage the use of inflatables in the sea, if you do happen to have or find one that is broken - please place in or next to the Beach toy library as these will be collected and passed to Planet Rubber for upcycling. Please help to protect our seas and keep our beaches clean.

Anyone interested in setting up a new library can email seafronts@tendringdc.gov.uk to explore options.

Beach Clean

We welcome volunteers and community groups to get involved and take pride in where they live and enhance the appearance of our district and help us keep Tendring free of litter.

We currently have many community groups that regularly borrow our litter picking equipment.  This has resulted in 52 litter picking events taking place in 2021, 62 in 2022, and 74 taking place in 2023 so far.

If you are interested in borrowing our equipment for a litter picking event, we have a small supply of litter pickers, hoops and can provide bags and also arrange for the collection and disposal of collected waste, please contact us on 01255 686788 or email recycle@tendringdc.gov.uk

Safety whilst litter picking

Please be aware that Tendring District Council is not liable for any incidents that occur whilst community groups are litter picking.  We do advise groups not to litter pick on fast/busy roads and to always wear protective gloves whilst collecting litter and if any hazardous waste is found e.g needles please do not touch them and inform us of their location so our contractors can collect safely.

We also welcome any community groups to send us pictures of the collected waste so we can display this on our website.
