Climate Change - What is the Council doing?

The Council declared a climate emergency on 6 August 2019

A motion submitted by Neil Stock OBE was backed by Councillors from all parties during a full Council meeting. The motion committed the Council to preparing an action plan for consideration by councillors with the aim of making its activities net zero carbon by 2030.

As well as looking at what it can do to reduce its environmental impact, the action plan was to examine how the Council can act as a community leader to encourage the rest of Tendring to join in its mission. TDC's Cabinet agreed £150,000 of funding to pay for specialist advice for the action plan to be drawn up. A cross party climate change working group was set up to oversee the preparation of the action plan.

November 2020

Tendring District Council (TDC) has set out its plans to become net zero carbon by 2030.

The plan, initially covering the period to 2023 sets out a series of measures to reduce the council’s own greenhouse gas emissions, which will cost an estimated £7.3million over the ten-year period to 2030 – each intervention will need to be agreed subject to a detailed business case.

However, the plan also identifies that by 2029 TDC could save almost £1m each year in energy efficiency by making the changes.

Available data shows TDC’s CO2 emissions totalled 4,553 tonnes in 2018/19 across three ‘scopes’ – direct emissions, indirect (such as electricity supplier) and indirect (use of goods and services).

TDC has committed to become net zero across the first two, which are under its control, but will also work towards reducing its ‘scope three’ emissions. A key element of the action plan is around community leadership and encouraging businesses and residents in the district to play their part.
