Tendring District Council launches consultation on exciting new Playzones

A public consultation is underway on the proposed development of five Playzones in the district.

This initiative is part of Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Sports and Leisure Strategy commitment to enhancing community facilities and promoting active lifestyles.

Playzones are multi-use games areas found in public spaces allowing residents of all ages to use the space for a variety of sports and games, and would be largely funded by the Football Foundation, supported with some cash from TDC.

It is proposed to build Playzones at the following locations:

  • Walton-on-the-Naze, Bathhouse Meadow
  • Clacton, Clacton Leisure Centre, Vista Road
  • Brightlingsea, Lower Park Road
  • Jaywick Sands, Crossways Recreation Ground
  • Dovercourt, Cliff Park

These Playzones are part of the council’s recently adopted Sport and Leisure Strategy, aimed at tackling inequalities in physical activity and providing safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for all community members – helping to improve quality of life.

The Playzones will feature high-quality surfaces suitable for various sports and activities, and will be accessible year-round thanks to floodlighting.

Councillor Mick Barry, TDC Cabinet member for Sport and Leisure, said: “The introduction of Playzones is a significant step forward in our Sport and Leisure Strategy.

“By working with partners at the Football Foundation to improve lifestyle choices, we are making progress to improved community access to top-notch facilities that encourage physical activity and social interaction.”

The consultation is open until Monday, 14 October, and can be completed online at www.tendringdc.gov.uk/consultations, while paper copies of the consultation are available from Clacton Town Hall and TDC leisure centres.

If the project goes ahead – which is subject to funding and planning permissions – the aim is to have the Playzones completed by Spring 2026, with each progressing on its own timeline.
