A new role has been established on Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet highlighting the importance of the district’s heritage.

Gary Scott will join the executive committee as Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Councillor Scott, who was Chairman of the council in 2023/4, has been appointed to the position - which includes responsibility for the management of the council-run Princes Theatre in Clacton - by TDC Leader Mark Stephenson.

Councillor Stephenson said the appointment came following a review of portfolio holder responsibilities.

“Promoting Tendring’s heritage, attracting visitors and encouraging them to stay longer is a core part of Our Vision, the council’s corporate plan for 2024-2028,” he said.

“Championing the arts and culture is also an important part of raising our residents’ aspirations and creating opportunities.

“I am therefore pleased to welcome Councillor Scott to the Cabinet – he will bring a wealth of experience to the role.”

Councillor Scott said he is delighted to have been appointed to serve on the Cabinet.

“I am looking forward to working with my Cabinet colleagues to deliver the Our Vision priorities across my portfolio,” he said.

Councillor Scott will be responsible for arts, entertainment, culture and heritage initiatives, projects and related events and he will also be the council’s lead member for Arts Council liaison and for the management of the Princes Theatre.

His portfolio will oversee rural affairs and Councillor Scott will also be the council’s equality and inclusion champion as well as the authority’s representative on the Superfast Essex Steering Group.
