The Red Ensign is flying at Clacton Town Hall today (Monday, 4 September) to mark Merchant Navy Day.

The Ensign, the flag of the Merchant Navy, was hoisted in a short ceremony at the Tendring District Council (TDC) offices as the authority marked the occasion. Merchant Navy Day itself fell on Sunday (3 September).

TDC Chairman Gary Scott read a message from the HRH Earl of Wessex, President of the Seafarers UK charity, before the flag was hoisted.

Cllr Scott said: “Our Merchant Navy plays a vital role in keeping us supplied with food and goods, and this allows us to publicly give our thanks to the Merchant Navy and all who serve in it.

“Their efforts, across many years, keep us connected to the rest of the world.”

A minute’s silence was also held as the flag was raised to remember those who had lost their lives in service for the Merchant Navy.
