Ethical Approach to Artificial Intelligence Use Adopted by Council

A bold step has been taken by Tendring District Council (TDC) in embracing the future of technology with the adoption of an ethical approach to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

At a Cabinet meeting on Friday (20 December), senior councillors endorsed a comprehensive AI Best Practice Approach document.

This framework ensures the responsible and effective use of AI technologies, focusing on issues including data governance, transparency, accountability, and bias mitigation.

It does not commit the authority to any specific use of AI, but sets out the parameters within which it should be used as the council continues to innovate in this area – and emphasises the importance of human oversight to ensure accuracy and ethical use.

Councillor Mark Stephenson, TDC Leader, said: “The adoption of this ethical AI approach marks a pivotal moment for Tendring District Council.

“As we look to embrace the potential of AI to enhance our services, it is crucial that we do so responsibly and ethically. This framework ensures that we remain accountable and transparent in our use of AI, ultimately benefiting our residents and maintaining their trust.”

The AI Best Practice Approach consolidates existing policies and provides detailed guidance on the ethical use of AI, such as considerations for cyber security, fairness, and avoiding misinformation.

Developed following consultation with various council departments and drawing upon wider best practice set out by the Information Commissioners Office and UK Government Civil Service, the approach also sets out some best practice and top tips to encourage innovation by staff.

The adoption of this approach aligns with TDC’s Communications Strategy for 2024-2028, and is an action point both within the strategy and a milestone in the council’s highlight priority actions for 2024/25.
