Council formally adopts Neighbourhood Plans for Elmstead and Ardleigh

Council leaders have formally adopted Neighbourhood Plans for Elmstead and Ardleigh, marking a significant step in guiding future development in the villages.

Following referendums last month, Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet officially adopted the plans at a meeting on Monday, 21 October.

The plans, which were developed by local residents, will now play a crucial role in shaping the future of the communities.

The Elmstead Neighbourhood Plan received a 92.6 percent approval from voters at the referendum on September 12, while the Ardleigh Neighbourhood Plan was supported by 86.5 percent of voters.

Councillor Andy Baker, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, said the results reflect the strong community engagement in the process.

“The adoption of the Neighbourhood Plans for Elmstead and Ardleigh is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the local communities,” he said.

“These plans reflect the aspirations of the residents and provide a framework for future development that respects the unique character of each area.

“By having their say, residents are shaping the future of their own communities, helping them to take even greater pride in where they live.”

The Neighbourhood Plans have undergone extensive consultation and examination processes, ensuring they meet all statutory requirements.

The Elmstead Neighbourhood Plan aims to maintain the village’s rural charm while accommodating necessary growth through sensitive infill and protecting the surrounding countryside. It focuses on conserving the village’s heritage character, enhancing green infrastructure, and sustaining essential community facilities.

The Ardleigh Neighbourhood Plan prioritises preserving the village’s historic character and enhancing community amenities. It promotes sustainable transport options, protects and improves the ecological value of green infrastructure, and supports essential community services.

Now formally adopted, these plans will have the same legal status as the district-wide Local Plan and will be used alongside it in deciding planning applications within the respective areas.

The adoption of these plans provides a framework for sustainable development that reflects the unique character and needs of each community.

The plans cover various aspects of local development, including housing, green spaces, transport, and community facilities, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive approach to future growth.
