Tendring District Council (TDC) is paying tribute to “the few” ahead of Battle of Britain Day (Friday, 15 September).

The authority is flying a special Battle of Britain Memorial flag at Clacton Town Hall this week to remember the aerial conflict, which took place in 1940 as part of the Second World War.

TDC Chairman Gary Scott joined members of the Clacton branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) for a short ceremony – which included the blowing of a whistle in line with RAF base tradition – before the flag was hoisted yesterday morning (Monday, 11 September).

Cllr Scott said: “Our wartime prime minister Sir Winston Churchill called the brave pilots of the RAF ‘the few’ as he recognised their service and sacrifice to keep Britain safe and in the war against Nazi tyranny – and it is important that we remember that service and sacrifice too.

“It is because of their heroic efforts that we can enjoy our freedom today, and this is a fitting tribute – especially following on just a few weeks from Clacton Airshow which included displays by Spitfires, that iconic fighter aircraft piloted by ‘the few’.”

RAFA is also holding a service marking the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Britain at Clacton War Memorial on Sunday, 17 September, from 10am.

Councillor Scott will take part, and lay a wreath on behalf of the council, while the public are invited to attend.
