The Pride Progress flag has been hoisted at Clacton Town Hall to mark National Coming Out Day.
The multi-coloured flag was hoisted today (Friday, 11 October) at the Tendring District Council (TDC) offices as a celebration of diversity and to recognise the benefits that coming out can provide to the LGBTQIA+ community.
It will be flown at the Town Hall over the weekend, whilst the building will also be illuminated in cheerful rainbow colours.
Dan Casey, TDC Chairman, gave a short speech that was watched by several residents.
“National Coming Out Day shines a light on the importance of awareness and visibility for the LGBT+ community,” Councillor Casey said.
“For many, the act of sharing their sexuality and gender identity to family, friends, and colleagues can be a daunting experience due to fears of abuse or conflict. It is not a singular event but a continuous journey that LGBT+ individuals navigate throughout their lives.
“National Coming Out Day is a powerful reminder that these individuals are not alone. It is a day to stand together, support one another, and celebrate the diverse identities that make up our community across Tendring. Let us continue to foster a society where everyone can live openly and proudly, without fear of judgment or discrimination.”
North Essex-based charity The Out House offers a range of support for LGBT+ individuals of all ages and also training opportunities for businesses to establish safe spaces though awareness and understanding.
