Following the adoption of the Tendring Heritage Strategy in April 2020, Tendring District Council is in the process of updating the District’s twenty Conservation Area Appraisals and preparing a ‘Local List’ of non-designated heritage assets within the District.
The Council is running a long-term ‘Call for Heritage Sites’ exercise. This public consultation is an opportunity for Parish and Town Councils, landowners, members of the public and other interested parties to submit non-designated heritage assets to the Council for future consideration.
The six-month consultation will run from Monday 2nd December 2024 and close at 5pm on Monday 2nd June 2025.
To submit a site to this consultation, please complete the nomination form and email it to locallist@tendringdc.gov.uk or post it to: Planning Policy, Tendring District Council, Town Hall, Station Road, Clacton-on-Sea, CO15 1SE.
The criteria against which non-designated heritage assets will be assessed can be found here: LINK
The preparation of local heritage lists is a way for communities, neighbourhood plan-making bodies and local planning authorities to identify and celebrate the historic buildings, places and spaces, archaeological sites and historic parks, gardens and other designed landscapes which enrich and enliven the area.
Non-designated heritage assets are locally identified ‘buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas or landscapes identified by plan-making bodies as having a degree of heritage significance meriting consideration in planning decisions, but which do not meet the criteria for designated heritage assets’ (PPG). It is important to note that some non-designated heritage assets are equivalent to designated heritage assets in terms of significance.
Non-designated heritage assets can be identified in several ways, including:
The Alresford Neighbourhood Plan, for example, identifies nine non-designated heritage assets, such as Station House, The Old School House and Alresford Grange. TDC’s updated Conservation Area Appraisals also identify a number of non-designated heritage assets across the District.
A local heritage list, which is based on sound evidence and criteria, delivers a consistent and accountable way of recognising non-designated heritage assets, no matter how they are identified.
