Year six children inspired to be in this world

Thursday, 13 July, 2017

Forty-five Year six children from Sir Martin Frobisher Academy in Jaywick Sands have finished their year on a high by having their collective works published.

The Junior Warden Project, in partnership with the Jaywick Sands Community Forum, is aimed at encouraging children to be more involved with their community and take pride in the environment in which they live, by providing new and challenging experiences and promoting active citizenship.

This scheme is now in its fourth year, with this year’s theme being cultural awareness and the children being encouraged to have respect for themselves, their community and environment.

The children have made new discoveries and sang, danced and role-played, with the activities reflecting the differences in culture in Africa, India, China and London.

A large part of the project involved working with the author and publisher Anita Belli, who taught the children how to recreate stories in their own words, pictures or poems, and those works have now been turned into a book called ‘Inspired to be in this world.’

The title of the book was taken from one of the pieces of work written by Kieron, aged 11.

Paul Honeywood, Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet Member for Housing with special responsibility for Jaywick Sands, said he was delighted the project continues to be a success.

“This project has grown and evolved each year, and for the children to have a book of their inspiring work published is a real credit to them.”

Teresa Watson, TDC’s Jaywick Sands Neighbourhood Manager and lead on the Junior Wardens project, praised the children for their enthusiasm.

“The children are to be commended for embracing and celebrating the project, and the book is a marvellous reflection of their journeys and experiences throughout.”

“The children displayed a positive attitude of respect and understanding towards other cultures and learned that each culture had something in common, that we are not so different from each other and that we are all from the same planet.”

The children were presented with certificates by the Pearly Queen of Bermondsey and Chelsea, Dee Russell.

‘Inspired to be in this world’ will be available to buy via Amazon.co.uk priced at £4.99, by the end of the school term on Friday 21 July.
