Travellers occupy part of Leisure Centre car park

A small group of Travellers have set up camp on part of Clacton Leisure Centre car park.

The Travellers arrived on the site owned by Tendring District Council (TDC) yesterday evening.

There are three caravans and three other vehicles at the top end of the car park, nearest to the Vista Road entrance.

TDC staff visited the group today to discover their intentions and reported the incursion to the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) which will begin the process to have them evicted.

The ECTU will also attend the site and once the paperwork is completed a Direction to Leave will be served which will give the Travellers 24 hours to move on.

If they do not comply the ECTU will then book a court hearing and go through the procedure necessary to evict the group, which is likely to take between seven and ten days.

Paul Honeywood, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said that all possible action will be taken to remove the Travellers as quickly as possible.

“The matter is now in the hands of the ECTU who we pay to deal with Traveller incursions on our behalf,” he added.

Travellers are also on land next to the Columbine Centre at Walton and the ECTU issued a Direction to Leave this morning.
