Travellers issued with direction to leave

A group of travellers who pitched up at Walton’s Columbine Centre overflow car park have been ordered to leave within 24 hours.

Essex Countywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) visited the site this morning and served a Direction to Leave notice.

This requires the group to move on within 24 hours of receiving the notice.

The group, made up of seven caravans and nine vehicles, arrived on land owned by Tendring District Council (TDC) on Tuesday afternoon.

Cllr Paul Honeywood, Cabinet Member for Housing, said the usual procedures were being followed.

“Once again our procedures have kicked in with the Direction to Leave now in place,” he said.

“If the group remains on the land after 24 hours then the next step will be to serve a court summons with a date for a hearing likely to be early next week.”
